Seeing is believing

It's looking like my favourite monitor is on it's last legs. I've never seen a better image than that produced by my 17" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 720, but at over 4 years old it has started to produce some glitches.

So I want to replace it with a 17" LCD. Anybody have any recommendations? I'd prefer it to be black/silver and must have a DVI connection (and maybe a D-Sub as well). Not interested in useless extras like USB hubs and speakers. Price is important but if the rumours currently flying about are true, that we've actually hit our financial targets this year, there may be a nice bonus coming soon, fingers crossed.

I'm torn between fronting up for a 20" @1600x1200 or getting the 17" @1280x1024 and maybe buying a second matching 17" at a later date. I can't buy a 19" CRT at the moment, as was my original plan, as I now have a company 24" CRT Widescreen Sony FW900 sitting on my desk. This thing isn't huge, it's positively gargantuan.

  • Shakeel bought a 19 inch Iiyama which he raves about (http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=2V9Q&searchphrase=iiyama%2019). Worth noting that the display resolution of the 19inch is the same as the 17 (E431). The 17inch is 105 quid cheaper!

  • Yeah, I just don't get 19" LCDs, as you say the resolution is the same (1280x1024) as a 17". That's why I was really looking for a 17" but the thought of stumping up for a 20" at 1600x1200 is making me start to dribble.

It's not that I'm a resolution tart or anything but if you pay for the extra inches you would expect to get more dots! Especially as 1280x1024 is perfectly readable on a good 17" CRT and eith a 19" CRT you'd be expecting 1600x1200 as the main resolution, very strange.

  • Agreed - thats why I've held off getting an LCD. Resolution at 19inch just seems....wrong.

  • I've promised myself an LCD monitor when mine packs in, but at 6 years old the damn thing is still as good as new! Bloody Iiyama and their high quality kit!
Personally I would get the 19" and be happy to run at 1280x1024...

  • So that's 2 votes for iiyama then. Their 3 year onsite swap out warranty is pretty hard to ignore. I'm really leaning towards getting a 20.1" though, hmmm... lie down, it will pass.

Ideally I'd want to get a huge CRT first but until I get this Sony monster back to work I don't have the desk space.

  • My advice would be to get an LCD capable of 1600 x 1200 and forget about a CRT. At work we buy Dell Latitude "Engineering" spec laptops that will run at that on 15.1" screens (I have one, and really like it). A couple of the Engineers who got one had nice 21" CRT monitors they kept initially when they got their laptops, and had docking stations so they could use the monitor. All of them gave up on the CRT, the laptop screen was nicer to use and took up no extra space on the desk.

Only hassle is when you get to that resolution some fonts etc can be small, though they are pin sharp, a bigger screen would help.

I have heard from a few people who have bought 16:9 ratio displays that they don't like them, even if you have a display adaptor that is set up for them, most graphics related applications are tailored for 4:3 and the different layout can make them a little strange to use.

  • I think I've decided. The 20.1" LCD is just too expensive, I had always planned to get a large CRT as the main monitor and I'm going to stick with that idea. I'll get a 17" LCD as the second monitor for "the beast" to run e-mail, web, office, media player etc and when my desk is returned to normal I'll get a 22" CRT to run CAD/CAM, graphics etc. For absolute quality a CRT cannot be beaten. The Quadro 4 graphics card in the beast will eat the both of them up.

    Looking at an Iiyama E431S,

  • I got a 17" LG1710B in April and have been really pleased with it. Having both D-sub, and DVI is useful although I can't say I notice a huge quality difference between them. USB ports for plugging in keyboard/mouse are an added bonus.

  • The LG1710B was actually my favoured choice for a while, but it has now been replaced by the LG1730B I think. I liked the fact that it had the DVI cable included (now they don't). But I'm going to go with iiyama for the 3 year onsite swapout warranty and the 17" LCD and 22" CRT are both PCPro 'A' listed items.

  • As a belated update to this it looks like the LG1730b is no longer available in the UK as I have found it impossible to track down anywhere. Strange. I know from looking at the logs of this blog that a lot of people arrive at this page through search engines looking for a LG1730b. If you type LG1730B into Google and check the UK box you arrive at this page. It's a goolewhack!!!!
