Hard Disk Update

My recent woes with failing hard drives have been brought to a successful conclusion. I received a replacement drive under warranty today. This is probably the first time I've ever claimed a warranty failure with a computer component. Usually I'd have shrugged my shoulders, threw it in a drawer, and bought a new one. My thanks to Hitachi Storage (now responsible for IBM's Deskstar drive) for a relatively painless procedure.

  • Hope you managed to delete all the porn before you returned it.

  • No porn to delete (well I don't think so, I'm not exactly sure what "porn" is). There was a 10Gb directory called "Broadband Downloads", a 15Gb MP3 directory not to mention the 20Gb "Movie" directory... hold on, there's a knock at the door...

  • I have had 2 deskstars fail, both probably due to heat, and these drives do have a reputation for crashing heads. Both machines at home still have these drives, but now with dedicated fans cooling the drives.

  • Bugger, mind you, as I said, I did thrash that particular drive to death :-) and now the replacement has a brand new 3 year warranty attached so I'm happy.
