3D Space Model

I've created a quick 3D space model of the most lust worthy object of desire at the moment, the Samsung SP50L7HX. A brief measure of the room and I felt it would fit OK but I wanted a better idea of the sheer scale of the beast by rendering (using Blender, naturally) an image showing the 3D model in the correct location.

I'm really poor at interior lighting so this is just a very quick test to get an initial idea. Lesley commented that it looked well smart and appears to fit in OK. I'll create a proper photorealistic model and rendering of the TV soon and either composite it into an actual photograph of our living room (when decorated) or do a better rendering of the room.

The view shown above (click image to enlarge) is roughly taken from my favourite position, lying on the sofa. There is enough room to allow the curtains to sit behind the corner of the TV and to be easily drawn. One problem though is where to put the Sky box, DVD player, Amp etc. The SP50L7HX has an optional stand add-on but the design of this doesn't allow the TV to placed in a corner so that's a non starter. We'll probably get a small equipment table and place it beneath the window, should look well smart, oh yes.

  • I recommend you add all your furniture to your rendering to get a more thorough sense of scale. Your planned location is very similar to how my mere 42” screen is placed. Typical reactions from people coming in for the first time are “F*** me, what a big TV”.

Also needed to let you know that Costco have a good selection of big screens, including the one you are interested in, which is just under two grand incl VAT. They also have the Sony 43” rear projection, and a number of other plasma and lcd screens.

  • Yeah, it's just a work in progress but modeling soft sofas isn't easy, I will be updating it regularly. Also it is impossible to mimic what the eye sees with a fixed focal length of a camera (even if it is virtual) so it's all going to be in the interpretation. At least it fits :)

I know from the avforums that Costco have good deals on these tellys, but I do intend to wait.

  • Hi Ricky, I'm after one myself (The Samsung) and when I looked at the one in costco it looks like you can move the glass shelves round to the front if you're sticking it in a corner. Naturally it means your boxes will point 45 degrees left or right but it should be OK.

PS any chance of a copy of your CAD model, ideally in .3DS format if you have it. I use floorplan 3D and would like to paste it in if you would be so kind.

  • Sure, no problem, but what format do you require the file in to import into your software?

By Blogger Ricky Dee, at 01 December 2005 21:33

  • the format is 3DS i.e. filename.3DS it will also take files with the extension .BMO. In case niether of these are not options in your software I can take it in anything that TurboCAD will Accept and then convert it from there.

PS have you had a look at that Floorplan 3D Software. So somple to use, cheap to buy (£50 Quid together with TurboCAD and the output is magnificent. I think it's lightworks it uses for rendering but the quality is like your picture above.
