Blender News

An amazing amount of news relating to Blender has happened since the latest release, but none bigger than a new Open Movie project. In no particular order we have:

Blender named as the most popular animation package in the world beating all the industry heavy-weights (based on an estimated 1.8 million downloads last year).

The release of a new, official book from the Blender Foundation (their main source of income). Due to start shipping tomorrow I ordered mine ages ago.

3DConnexion, the makers of 3D motion controllers, are actually working with the Blender Foundation to develop support for their devices including the low cost SpaceNavigator. They've supplied some free devices to Blender Developers and will promote Blender at their Sigraph 2007 booth. A development branch of Blender has been created to aid development. Fantastic news, I'll be able to use my Spaceball with the latest releases of Blender, nice.

Peach Open Movie project is a go. A follow up to the worlds first "Orange" Open Source Movie project which gave us "Elephants Dream". This time we're promised fluffy bunnies, loads of fluffy bunnies. Can't wait to get to play with all the production files.

The creation of a "Blender Institute" as a permanent office and studio to further develop Blender and it's usage.

Finally we have the "Apricot" Open Source Game project. In tandem with the open source Crystal Space game engine, and closely tied to the "Peach" project (utilising character design and files etc) the aim is to produce a professional quality game using open source software.
