World Cup Warm-Up

It's so close I can almost taste it. Why do I love the World Cup? Check out this great montage of quirky World Cup moments from recent tournaments on the BBC. The Martin O'Neill critique of Robbie Williams' career is TV gold, Saint Pat of Jennings and the Mariachi band serenade is bizarre, the goal keeping blunders jaw dropping, the fouls disgusting. The scary thing is I'm pretty sure I saw everyone of them live at the time, I LOVE THE WORLD CUP.

I really, really hope we're in for a classic tournament, but for that to happen we need England to go as far as they can to get the whole country (Scotland, Wales and Norn Iron included) on the edge of their seats whether you want them to win or not. Come on!

Big Brother 7

Lesley has pissed her pants and there's only four housemates in the house. I predict a long, long summer. I will resist... hurry up the World Cup and save me from this hell.

Central Heating Update 6

Long time no post, piss poor. We've been basking in the magnificence that is central heating, marvelous, them Romans were definitely on to something.

Everything went like a dream, very disconcerting but extremely welcome. The gas supply went without a hitch as did the gas meter installation. Next up the actual central heating install was done in a whirlwind two and a half days with zero disruption. Fantastic. If you're in need of the services of a highly recommended Heating Engineer in Angus, Scotland then drop me a comment.

The timetable of work went something like this:

Tuesday 2/05/06
7:45am Engineer arrives, checks that we both agree as to what goes where.
9:15am The new radiators and boiler is off loaded, all old storage heaters dismantled and removed.
16:45 First day finished with boiler mounted to wall, flue installed through roof, and all 10 radiators mounted to their walls.

Wednesday 3/05/06
07:45-16:45 All downstairs radiators (7 off) plumbed in to boiler.

Thursday 4/05/06
07:45-14:30 Upstairs radiators plumbed in. Old hot water system (tank and pipes) removed. System commissioned and checked.

Arrived home to a lovely warm house. Bliss. The Engineer dropped round that night to show us how everything worked and to make sure we were happy. The whole thing is wirelessly controlled which appeals to my geek side :-) Off he went saying something about sending us an invoice (we got it last week and paid it today). All done and dusted.

With the exception of the insulation contractor no-show, right at the start of the project, the whole thing went exactly how I'd hoped it would. We'll have to sort the insulation out before the winter and I'll blog further when we've had a few gas bills. At the moment we're just trying to come to terms with the whole thing but as the weather has improved we're unlikely to learn much about settings for temperature and timers before the autumn.

Google on the Slippery Slope?

Interesting little article appeared last week on theregister.co.uk about Google's ongoing problems in the search business.

Now I'm not some high flying webmaster with a million a month unique visitors but this article rang a few bells in my head.

Firstly, Google's search results have been on the decline for some time now. Choked with spam, price comparison sites, affiliate links, link farms etc etc getting to the real information has become practically impossible. Personally if I'm searching for information I tend to identify the site with a popular forum community on the subject and search through their archives first. For example, If it's anything to do with AV hardware then it's off to www.avforums.com I go, if it's something I'm looking to buy I'll check out user comments and reviews at sites like Amazon and so on. Where I used to stumble upon interesting sites through searching on Google I'm now more likely to find interesting links through blogs, I'm sure I'm not alone.

Secondly, Google's indexing of this site has been piss poor for a while now. The search site function seems to be completely borked even although I've changed nothing in the code.

Thirdly, my adsense revenue, which reached a quite respectable peak in December, held fairly steady through January and February and then fell off a cliff from March onwards. The amount I earn from the adverts is small (my December peak was $21.45 for that month) but enough to notice that something has happened beyond my control.

Google on one hand earns it's revenue from sponsored links but it needs the traffic from providing solid search results to drive that revenue. I wonder if Microsoft or Yahoo! are planning anything different from Google's business model for their text advert systems?
