Painful Viewing

I watched PMQs today and I've got to say if it was a boxing contest it would have been stopped by the ref after about 30 seconds. Gordon Brown (the great leader) has taken a pasting in nearly every PMQs since his "rise" to power. He really does have the look of a haunted, dead man walking, even the Lib-Dems have managed to put the boot in.

Now, I'm no lover of the Labour Party or the Labour Government but faced with the possibility of a Tory Fascist regime led by that oily little scroat Cameron I'd rather leave the country than revisit the dark days of the bitch thatcher's dictatorship with her cronies (why are all tory fascists such gits?) rooting in a trough of greed. But I fear the English are once again preparing themselves to force such a hideous plague upon us all. I despair, I really do. I had hoped to see the bitch thatcher dead and buried for at least a decade before the possibility of a tory government could even be entertained. I fecking hate tory scum, I do.

Dolphin: 3D Human Model Update

dol-img-0008Hey, hey, hey, finally updated the human model for the Dolphin Project, by giving it a head. Not too shabby if you ask me.

Click on image for flickr photo set and click on the Dolphin tag below for more information about the (slow moving) project. That is all for now.

Update: Added a wireframe of the head to the flickr set.

We Salute You

With the man now known as King David of Healy joining the greats of Norn Iron football headed by Sir Danny of Blanchflower, Lord Billy of Bingham and topped, of course, by Saint Pat of Jennings we (the people) wait with bated breath and fingers crossed for a miracle of such proportions it would shake the Christian church to it's very foundations if Norn Iron were to beat Spain tonight and Latvia hump Sweden.

For that is what must happen if the glorious Green and White Army are to pack their passports once more for a footballing festival. Stranger things have happened (helicopter Sunday springs to mind :), but not many. Now is not the time to dwell on the cudda, wudda, shudda's that have littered this campaign. Come on!

Laptop Bag

Still loving my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop but as it's a monstrous 17" behemoth it wouldn't fit into my existing 15.4" cases. So the search was on for a bag big enough to accommodate a 17" laptop which was also strong, stylish, spare room for power supply, mouse, tablet and assorted gubbins and also be inexpensive, enter the Targus CityGear Metro Messenger Notebook Case - 17". Daft name but you can't have everything.

Ticks all the boxes for my needs. Looks lovely in black and grey with yellow logos, has more storage space than a shipping container, is very comfortable to carry (with shoulder strap) when fully loaded and all for 22 quid, result. Highly recommended.

Writing the Perfect CV

Probably the least appealing thing to happen regarding my redundancy is having to write a new CV. I hadn't touched it for about four years and the thought of having to distill my life's experience onto a couple of pages just fills me with dread. Surely it's the most depressing thing imaginable to see over 20 years of your life laid bare for some stranger to pick holes in. Anyway, needs must and the deed has been done. I'll give a short description of it's content and layout below in case it may be of use to someone in the future.

There are a multitude of sites that claim to tell you exactly how to write a CV and even more who'll do it for you for a fee, guaranteeing that prospective employers will beat your door down to employ you. Bollocks to that, it's mostly common sense and as every one's circumstances are different I would advise against a cookie cutter approach to it's layout and content.

Due to my age it's obvious that experience and skills are going to be the cornerstone of my CV. Education is now of little importance apart from my Degree so a couple of lines is all I need to list the required information.

I start with my name in large bold type centred across the top of the page. Then 2 text boxes with my contact details, address, phone, e-mail etc along with some basic personal information such as date of birth, nationality, driving licence etc.

Next up I give a short executive summary of me... "A highly experienced, Degree qualified, Mechanical Design Engineer with proven record at all levels of Engineering particularly in ......" You get the idea. Remember, managers are so "important" (in their own minds) they'll fall asleep if forced to read more than 3 or 4 lines of text so try and summarise the entire CV into these few sentences, they're are probably the most important part of the entire CV in my opinion.

Now I have a Skills Summary heading and list, in more detail my key skills. Things like software you use, industry sectors you have experience in, proven abilities (at interview you'll need to back up these claims with examples etc) details of products I've developed etc.

As mentioned previously I then list my qualifications the key one of which is my Degree (as this surpasses all other qualifications). I do though list my lesser qualifications (HNC, ONC, A and O levels) but don't go into much detail if any about grades and dates etc.

To complete the first page I have a heading for references but say only that they are available on request. Get an interview first before worrying about references. Also, another reason for leaving references contact details off is so you can tailor the reference contacts you give for the particular job you're going for. In the footer of the page I have my name and the words Curriculum Vitae in small letters.

The second page lists my past and present employment details. Start with your current or most recent employment. Give the company name, dates employed and job title held. In my case I was promoted to more senior positions twice within my employment so list these promotions, dates and job title changes. I give a brief overview of the company and then go into detail of my main duties, customers I've completed projects for, design awards (yes I have one) and patents (I have 4 design patents), key skills developed and what you brought to the party. Don't bullshit as you need to back this up at interview where you'll be asked in more detail about things listed here.

Finally I list my past employment details (only list relevant jobs though, by this stage being a paperboy after school is of no interest to anybody). If the job you're applying for has necessary experience which you touched on in previous jobs then you'll want to highlight that.

And that's it really. I like to customise my CV depending on the job I'm applying for as it's difficult to get one that fits all possible jobs you could apply for. You can also use the covering letter to direct the reader to specific areas that may be of use for that particular job. Wish me luck.

It's the Little Things

Not exactly being full of the joys of life thanks to my redundancy and a week long (and counting) near fatal dose of man flu I was quite surprised to laugh out loud at this story on the register regarding a terminally stupid bint and a scratch card. I defy you not to laugh at the cow.

"I phoned Camelot and they fobbed me off with some story that -6 is higher, not lower, than -8, but I'm not having it."

Hahahahahaha, point and laugh, point and laugh.

Mobile Phone

So first things first. I need a mobile phone as I'd been supplied with a phone by my former company for as long as I can remember. It's a bit of a shock after never seeing a mobile phone bill or looking at contracts for a few years to see how much these things actually cost now.

I really only need a PAYG as I'm not a heavy personal user of a mobile, mainly using it for texts to and from Lesley. She's on T-Mobile and gets great reception at home (better than I got on my works Orange contract phone) so I'll stick with that.

I've always used Ericsson/Sony Ericsson phones (partly because I did a lot of work with them and 'cause I hate Nokia and Motorola's design and handsets) so, again, I'll stick with what I know. A Sony Ericsson W810i is looking as the best bet at the moment, running on T-Mobile's TextAppeal tariff (3p per text 20p per min calls). And so it begins...

Update: As planned I picked up a W810i on T-Mobile for £69.99. Nice little phone will do me fine. Loving the FM radio and the supplied 512Mb card has been loaded with 70 odd tracks at 192kbps for my listening pleasure with room to spare. The camera is 2 Megapixels and seems to be quite good for the money. Not to sure about the control method, they seem to have done away with the 4 way joystick button (but left the button in place) so I keep pushing it while while writing a text message to add a space and nothing happens, I suppose I'll get used to it.

If you haven't got a text from me with the new number then it's because I don't have an up to date number for you.

Will Engineer for Food Cash

Well, the post title says it all. Today was my last day at work as I was officially made redundant a couple of weeks ago. All a bit hasty but there you go, the deed has been done and the best, little R&D team in the entire 99,000 employee company is no more. Me (Genius Mechanical Design Engineer) and my Electronic and Prototype Engineer colleagues were given the news a week past Monday. In a way it was a relief to finally get the confirmation we were dead men walking.

I'll not go into any detail about the circumstances or anything about my former Company lest to say that I know the real world identity of who Dilbert works for as they are* were one and the same :) Honestly, the stories I could tell you about the goings on would make your hair curl.

What's my immediate plans? Don't know just yet, I really need a bit of a break to get my head straight. Thankfully, I've no pressing financial worries which will allow me to weigh my options carefully before taking the plunge into a new job or career even. Obviously there'll be a lot more posts related to these events in the coming days and weeks.

*Yup, I've learned how to do a strikethrough, a new skill no less, that'll go straight onto my CV that will ;)...
