Twitter Update

I removed the twitter sidebar feed on the blog ages ago as the Twitter "service" is nothing but a complete shambles. However, I find it's use strangely compelling and have been regularly "tweeting" *yuk* about stuff. I think this is a direct link to my "tweets" *yuk* but I can't be sure if it works for everyone as it automatically logs me in to the "service" (they ought to be done under the trade description act for that). Anyway if you want extra inane drivel that's the place to go.

If you want a laugh I highly recommend the Twitter Status Blog which gives an hilariously funny (completely unintentional) running commentary on the latest disaster to befall the "service". In short, Twitter is broken (probably beyond repair) but they keep kicking it's rotting carcass into life (briefly) every once in a while before it inevitably breaks again. It's just like a scab you can't stop picking, I love it.

Inspiron 1720 AC Adapter

The AC adapter belonging to my 9 month old Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop had become dangerous in use due to the cable strain relief failing and exposing the power carrying cables. While the insulation around the individual power cables remained intact it's obviously a safety hazard with the potential of a fatal electric shock (for those interested it's covered by IEC 60950 -Second Edition, which calls for double insulation, a document I'm all too familiar with :-). I had noticed within the first couple of months that the strain relief was a design weak point (I am a genius Mechanical Design Engineer remember) and that it had already started to fail.

So off I trotted to Dell's UK support site to log a warranty claim (about 8pm). They have an online chat option but all the support staff were busy so I sent an e-mail quoting the machine's Dell service Tag, my mobile number and description of the problem. I received a reply at 7:15 the following morning from a nice Indian chap who "beseeched" me not to use the AC adapter until I had received a replacement. Nice to see they were taking the fault seriously, though looking at it I suspect this is a common fault as it is inherent to the poor design (I would have designed it much better).

After replying to his email confirming delivery address, contact number and answering a few questions about the condition of other parts of the laptop I received confirmation a replacement part would be shipped. The only fly in the ointment was the delivery had to be by courier as I must hand over the failed unit before the replacement was swapped (obviously for safety reasons to ensure I don't use it again, fair enough).

Three days later the courier arrived, gave Lesley the new one and left without asking for the old one. So..., I'll take it to my mate (former Electronic Engineer colleague) who "acquired" a lot of our old lab equipment last year ;-) so he can trim the old socket off, add a strain relief grommet, solder on a new socket, plonk on a bit of heat shrink tubing, a quick whoosh with the heat gun and result, we've got a spare (safe) adapter for the bedroom or such (I also bought Lesley an Inspiron 1520 last Christmas), very handy indeed.

Ten minutes after I got the text from Lesley saying the replacement had arrived I got a call on my mobile from an Indian wifey asking if everything went smoothly and checking I was happy with the support service from Dell. Can't really complain about the service I've received from Dell who seem to have a poor reputation for customer support but personally, through my dealings with them at both home and work, they've always been very good, so much so all the computers (one workstation and two laptops) in my house are Dell's. But, I would urge you to check the state of the AC cable from the power supply to your laptop as, chances are, it may be in a dangerous condition. If it is showing signs of wear, even if your machine is out of warranty, I'd demand a free replacement due to the potentially lethal nature of the failure.

Cobwebs and Tumbleweed

Well, I haven't been updating this blog with much of any interest in a long time. Truth is I can't seem to motivate myself these days with regards to the blog... and life if I'm honest. I'm finally getting away for a break next week (to Norn Iron to visit the folks) which will hopefully be good for me. The reason for the break is because my contract finishes on Friday with no hope of renewal as they're laying off lots of Engineers (boo) and Managers (hurrah).

Once again I find myself at a career crossroads since being made redundant in November. My soon to end contract was fantastic from a personal point of view - great money, 35 minutes door to door along beautiful country roads with little traffic and a job I could do with my eyes shut (and often did). The downside was there was often little to do which made the working day drag and the general state of the company (now run by accountants meaning profit in the short term, doom in the mid/long term). The worst aspect of contracting (for me) is the lack of ownership. I like "owning" the projects I'm working on, they're mine and I'm the man to ask. This doesn't happen with contractors. You're just the hired hand and although you know more about it than anyone else you're not the one who's asked/consulted regarding the project - this annoys me. I am a fecking Design Engineering genius after all.

Obviously this is not a good time to be without work due to the recession, rampant inflation, job losses etc. Thankfully our cash situation is good but I need to secure something to see out the next couple of years. I will not relocate, that much is certain, last year I turned down the chance to move to San Francisco so there is nowhere that will attract me away from where I am. Work in Aberdeen or Fife seems the most likely but my salary level combined with lack of Oil & Gas experience is an issue. Not really wanting to take a massive pay cut just to gain some experience and spend 2 hours+ a day travelling back and forward (I know, I've been spoiled rotten for the past 10 years with a good salary, interesting job and flexible hours, all handily located within 25 miles :-)

Anyhoo, not really looking for anything until we've come back from Norn Iron and then the search will start in earnest. I fecking hate recruitment companies, interviews, job hunting whatever. It's such a fecking game! Hopefully the break will give me some energy/interest to do something about the poor state of the blog, but I've been saying that for years.

WTF Part 1

I swear the time is coming to don the tin foil hat and retire to the newly dug bunker in the garden. A "Science" exam for 14 year olds?!!? WTF, I mean WTF is going on?

Some stars are bigger than the Sun but they look smaller. Why do they look smaller than the Sun?

They are brighter than the Sun
They are further away than the Sun
They are the same colour as the Sun
They are nearer than the Sun

This is scary bone crushingly scary, a Father Ted script passing as a "Science" exam. WTF is Science, whatever happened to Physics?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we need a cull, a massive cull to redress the balance between those who are capable of independant thought and the rest of the life sucking leeches that infest this country.

I blame the bitch thatcher.
